A glucometer is the instrument used to measure the levels of glucose in a blood sample. They are cheap, easy to use and widely available.

Blood glucose measurement is a useful and commonly performed laboratory test. It is typically employed in the diagnosis and management of diabetes mellitus in dogs and cats. However it is also very useful in the nursing care of sick, hypothermic or anaesthetised neonates of all species, where hypoglycaemia is a common and serious condition.
